The German region of Ruhr experience severe economic decline followed by the implementation of a series of successful development measures.  Pudlik and Garas will discuss those reforms, along with their applicability in other post-industrial parts of Europe, including the Polish region of Upper Silesia.

Dr. Walsh is an associate professor of economics whose research interests include public economics, urban economics, environomental economics, and racial disparities.  At this session, he is joined by Lin Cui, a doctoral student in economics and former PNCIS graduate student researcher.  They will present their findings in the field of urban economics.

Alexandra Murphy is conducting a ethnographic community study of the social organization of suburban poverty and everyday life in one increasingly poor suburb of Pittsburgh: Penn Hills.  Her research seeks to understand the dynamics of suburban poverty and social situations of diverse suburban actors, such as civil society organizations.  This research is complemented by spatial analysis using PNCIS data.
