The Pittsburgh region is the home to just under 154 thousand veterans as of 2017, but the size and composition of local veterans is changing. The total number of regional veterans has declined nearly 24% between 2010 and 2017, reflecting continuing declines in older veterans with service primarily during World War II or the Korean War.
Currently, the largest group of veterans residing in the Pittsburgh MSA served during the Vietnam Era with periods of service between August 1964 and April 1975. Just over 55,000 Vietnam Era veterans make up just under 28% of all Pittsburgh region veterans in 2017. Gulf War veterans are split between those with service between 1990 and August 2001, and those with service since September 2001. An estimated 14,744 post-9/11 veterans currently reside in the region as of 2017.
The graphic below shows current estimates for Pittsburgh veterans grouped by their period of service.
